Attend local city council and school board meetings

We can make a difference by being involved at the local level of city and school district governments. Attending in person and reporting to our branch helps us to stay visible and informed in our local communities.

10 Tips for Engaging at City Council & School Board Meetings (These tips are provided by our WIN Chair Kristen Newsome.)

Raising concerns at city council meetings can be an effective way to advocate for change and engage with local governance. Here are some strategies to ensure your voice is heard:

1. Research and Prepare: Understand the issues you want to address. Gather facts, statistics, and any relevant documents that support your concerns.

2. Know the Rules: Familiarize yourself with the city council’s procedures for public comments. Each council may have specific guidelines regarding time limits, sign-up processes, and decorum.

3. Be Concise and Clear: Prepare a brief statement that outlines your concerns. Aim for clarity and focus, typically keeping your comments under 3 minutes.

4. Use Personal Stories: Share personal experiences or anecdotes to illustrate your concern. This can make your message more relatable and impactful.

5. Engage Others: If possible, gather support from community members who share your concerns. A collective voice can often carry more weight than a single one.

6. Propose Solutions: Instead of just highlighting problems, suggest actionable solutions. This shows that you are proactive and willing to work towards change.

7. Follow Up: After the meeting, follow up with council members or relevant departments to keep the conversation going. Share additional information or express gratitude for their attention.

8. Stay Respectful and Professional: Maintain a respectful tone, even when discussing contentious issues. This helps foster a constructive dialogue and keeps the focus on the issues.

9. Utilize Social Media: Use platforms to raise awareness about your concerns before and after the meeting. Engaging the community online can amplify your message.

10. Attend Regularly: Consistent attendance at meetings can help build relationships with council members and demonstrate your commitment to local issues.

Also--consider running for offices, participating on subcommittees, and setting up meetings with city leaders. Influence Is gained through relationship, and humanizing issues can make a huge impact.

By employing these strategies, you can effectively raise your concerns and contribute to meaningful discussions at city council and school board meetings.
